In the last 20 years since medical marijuana was first legalized the number of companies, brands, and manufacturers of CBD products has exploded. The reported health benefits of CBD have grown to match, leaving many of our customers unsure of what to believe.
In this article, we’ll dive deep into the uses and benefits of CBD for a variety of conditions for both people and pets. Not only what we used CBD for and where we find benefits by using it, but what research has proven through studies.
CBD Benefits for Humans
Research into the medical applications for components of the cannabis sativa (cannabis) plant was highly restricted until recently. Because of this, the data and evidence we do have pointing to the efficacy of CBD products to treat different conditions have been slow to come.
We are just beginning to understand how CBD and other cannabinoids interact with the human body. We do know that through the endocannabinoid system and CB1 and CB2 receptors CBD appears to help regulate and return the body to a state of homeostasis.
This makes the potential benefits of CBD applicable for many different conditions and maladies. In this next section, we will dive into some of the conditions we most often recommend our products to treat.
CBD Oil for sleep
It is estimated that as many as 70% of Americans fail to get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep and as many as a third of people fail to get 6 hours regularly. Because of CBD’s effects on maintaining bodily functions including circadian rhythms, it shows great promise helping people sleep better and for longer periods of time.
In a study released in the Permanente Journal 72 patients that reported sleep issues were given 25mg of CBD at different times of day, depending on what sleep-related issue they reported. Over the course of the study sleep, scores were tracked and 66% of the participants showed improved sleep.
Another study, published in Medicines, followed a little over 400 people for about 2 years. These people had reported struggles with insomnia in the pre-trial questionnaires. During this phase of the study, participants rated their symptoms on average a 6.6/10 in severity.
Over the course of the study, these patients were given cannabis flower with THC and CBD potencies between 7-30% and then asked again to rate the severity of their symptoms. This time the average was only 2.2, decreasing over 4 from the original test.
Another factor that plays a part when talking about CBD’s benefits for sleep is that it also is shown to help with both anxiety and chronic pain. Both of which are leading causes of lost sleep. We’ll cover both topics later in this article!

Coconut Citrus Oral Tincture
While most of the studies that have been done with CBD and anxiety have been done on rats and other animals, there is promising evidence that CBD and its interaction with the CB1 receptors in the brain could provide relief for many forms of Anxiety.
ProjectCBD.org has a detailed guide on the interaction but the basics are that CBD looks to be able to boost CB1 receptors in the brain that have been dampened by anxiety. By boosting these receptors your brain is able to release serotonin and other hormones that have a positive effect on mood.
The main notable study done on CBD and Anxiety in humans was completed in 2011 on a group that suffered from a social anxiety disorder. The participants were given 400mg of CBD orally while a control group was given a placebo. The patients given CBD showed “significantly decreased subjective anxiety.”

CBD May Help Reduce Pain and Inflammation
Historically there has been proof of various cultures using cannabis for its pain relieving benefits as far back as 2900 B.C. Many of these societies knew this as a fact that was passed down from generation to generation.
The current belief is that CBD acts to numb inflamed or overactive pain receptors, calming nerves and lessening the inflammation that often comes with chronic pain. Topical CBD products work especially well in this instance as they can be applied directly to the sore muscle or pain point.
In 2018 a review of multiple studies done on pain related to cancer, neuropathy, and fibromyalgia was completed and published on Frontiers in Pharmacology. The review concluded that all of these studies came to a similar conclusion. CBD was effective in managing pain and helped to relieve chronic issues.
Using CBD products, both topical and oral, for pain relief is an attractive option compared to many medications, especially opioids. CBD shows none of the addictive, habit forming side effects that are often associated with pain killers.

CBD for Other Conditions
The two products that are approved for use (one of which by the FDA), are actually not for any of the conditions we’ve talked about so far. While these conditions are less common than chronic pain, sleep issues, and anxiety, the fact there are approved CBD products for them is encouraging for CBD’s future.
Epidiolex is the only FDA approved CBD drug currently on the market today. It was approved in 2018 to treat seizures resulting from two forms of Epilepsy.
This approval is a huge step forward for CBD products as it opens the door for other FDA approvals. After three studies all provided support for the efficacy of CBD for these forms of Epilepsy, more products are likely to soon be reviewed by the FDA.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Although not approved in the United States, Sativex, a CBD based spray, is being used in several countries in Europe and Canada. This CBD based spray is being used to treat the neuropathic pain and spasticity associated with MS and some cancer related pain.
Phase 3 trials of Sativex is currently underway in the United States and will hopefully soon be added to the list of 25 countries where it is currently available.
Benefits of CBD for Pets
Most of us would do just about anything to improve the quality of our pet’s lives, and 4 Corners Cannabis CBD products might be exactly the way to do that. In fact, our Pet Tincture has been listed as the number one product on the American Veterinary Association website.
Animals, just like humans, have an endocannabinoid system that CBD products work with to combat a wide variety of ailments. Just like in human cases though, research tends to be a little thin so far and has mostly been done on rats rather than more common pets like cats and dogs.
The studies that have been done show CBD could offer benefit to animals suffering from many conditions, including:
- Inflammation and Pain
- Seizures and Convulsions
- Immune and Nervous system support
- Reduction in anxiety
- Gastrointestinal and Digestion support
In a recent article published in Today’s Veterinary Practice, they detail the studies that are currently underway and that have been published. Even without a large amount of research, they conclude “studies have shown cannabis’ potential efficacy for neuroprotection, anxiety, cancer, gastrointestinal support, and other conditions”.
“I’ve tried other manufacturers of CBD oil for my dog and yours was the first to make a life changing difference for her. Our Molly is 11 and has 3 good legs, the 4th gives her problems. With your oil she is like a puppy again. In fact we have to be careful to not give her more than 5 drops on her morning feeding or she will over do it. Thank you for your AmAzing product!”
